What does your Braemar fault code mean?

Pick the code showing on your remote, wall controller or indoor unit and see what it means, what commonly causes it, and what is safe to check yourself. This page covers 146 Braemar fault codes for units sold in Australia, compiled from official Australian manufacturer and distributor documentation, the same references our own technicians carry.

Heads up: Braemar uses the same code with different meanings on different product ranges, so check the model range shown next to the code.

Codes that mean switch the system off

If your Braemar unit shows 6, 19, 20, 21, 35, 49, EL, turn the system off at the isolator and leave it off. These faults involve the compressor, refrigerant or electrical protection, and running the unit can cause further damage.

The most serious Braemar fault codes explained

What does Braemar fault code 6 mean? (Braemar TQ and TQM series ducted gas heaters (ICS control board with MagIQtouch or SpectroLink wall control); on older TH series 5 star heaters code 6 instead means the OT4 over-temperature switch has opened)

The control board detected a flame signal at a time when no flame should be present, so the heater locked out as a safety measure.

Likely causes:

  • Flame sensing circuit fault on the control board
  • Older control board software (versions before V1.09 are more prone to this code)
  • Follow-on from internal flame sense self-test codes 70 to 78

Safe checks before you call:

  • Turn the heater off at the isolator or power point, wait 5 minutes, then turn it back on and press Retry on the wall controller if a message appears
  • If the code returns after one reset, leave the heater switched off and book a licensed gas fitter

What does Braemar fault code 19 mean? (Braemar TQ and TQM series ducted gas heaters (ICS control board with MagIQtouch or SpectroLink wall control); codes 1 to 19 are also logged by older TH series heaters with the SpectroLink SCC controller)

The backup heat exchanger over-temperature switch (OT2) opened, which is a serious overheating safety shutdown.

Likely causes:

  • Severe airflow restriction (blocked filter, closed outlets or crushed ducts)
  • Primary over-temperature protection failed to act first
  • Gas pressure set far too high
  • Faulty OT2 switch

Safe checks before you call:

  • Leave the heater switched off at the isolator and book a licensed gas fitter; this code needs a service-level reset

What does Braemar fault code 20 mean? (Braemar TQ and TQM series ducted gas heaters (ICS control board with MagIQtouch or SpectroLink wall control))

Flame roll-out was detected during start-up, meaning flame appeared outside the burner area, and the heater locked out.

Likely causes:

  • Blocked or restricted heat exchanger or flue
  • Burner cross-lighting slots obstructed
  • Combustion airflow fault

Safe checks before you call:

  • Leave the heater switched off at the isolator and book a licensed gas fitter; do not keep resetting this code

What does Braemar fault code 21 mean? (Braemar TQ and TQM series ducted gas heaters (ICS control board with MagIQtouch or SpectroLink wall control))

Flame roll-out was detected while the heater was running, meaning flame appeared outside the burner area, and the heater locked out.

Likely causes:

  • Blocked or restricted heat exchanger or flue
  • Combustion airflow fault developing during operation
  • Burner problem needing inspection

Safe checks before you call:

  • Leave the heater switched off at the isolator and book a licensed gas fitter; do not keep resetting this code

What does Braemar fault code 35 mean? (Braemar TQ and TQM series ducted gas heaters (ICS control board with MagIQtouch or SpectroLink wall control))

The flame roll-out safety circuit failed its self-check, so the heater locked out.

Likely causes:

  • Flame roll-out switch or wiring fault
  • Control board fault

Safe checks before you call:

  • Leave the heater switched off at the isolator and book a licensed gas fitter

What does Braemar fault code 49 mean? (Braemar TQ and TQM series ducted gas heaters (ICS control board with MagIQtouch or SpectroLink wall control))

The heater locked out five times within 15 minutes, so it has shut down hard and needs an inspection and manual reset.

Likely causes:

  • A recurring underlying fault (check the fault history for the codes that came before)
  • Repeated resets without fixing the original problem

Safe checks before you call:

  • Leave the heater switched off and book a licensed gas fitter; this code deliberately blocks further restarts until the heater is inspected

What does Braemar fault code EL mean? (Braemar ducted split refrigerated systems, including add-on cooling on ducted gas heating)

The system has been stopped by an emergency stop or fire alarm input.

Likely causes:

  • Building fire alarm or emergency stop circuit activated
  • Fault in the emergency stop wiring

Safe checks before you call:

  • Check whether a building fire alarm or emergency stop has been activated before doing anything else

What does Braemar fault code 1 mean? (Braemar TQ and TQM series ducted gas heaters (ICS control board with MagIQtouch or SpectroLink wall control); codes 1 to 19 are also logged by older TH series heaters with the SpectroLink SCC controller)

The low pressure safety switch was already closed before the combustion fan started, so the heater will not begin its start cycle.

Likely causes:

  • Pressure switch jammed closed or faulty
  • Condensate or debris blocking the pressure switch hoses
  • Blocked or restricted combustion fan suction fitting
  • Damaged or shorted pressure switch wiring

Safe checks before you call:

  • Turn the heater off at the isolator or power point, wait 5 minutes, then turn it back on and press Retry on the wall controller if a message appears
  • If the code returns after one reset, leave the heater switched off and book a licensed gas fitter

What does Braemar fault code 2 mean? (Braemar TQ and TQM series ducted gas heaters (ICS control board with MagIQtouch or SpectroLink wall control); codes 1 to 19 are also logged by older TH series heaters with the SpectroLink SCC controller)

The low pressure safety switch failed to close after the combustion fan started, so the heater locked out after three attempts.

Likely causes:

  • Combustion fan not running, jammed or faulty
  • Blockage in the flue, combustion fan or pressure switch hoses
  • Kinked, squashed or condensate-filled pressure switch hoses
  • Faulty pressure switch stuck open

Safe checks before you call:

  • Turn the heater off at the isolator or power point, wait 5 minutes, then turn it back on and press Retry on the wall controller if a message appears
  • If the code returns after one reset, leave the heater switched off and book a licensed gas fitter

What does Braemar fault code 3 mean? (Braemar TQ and TQM series ducted gas heaters (ICS control board with MagIQtouch or SpectroLink wall control); codes 1 to 19 are also logged by older TH series heaters with the SpectroLink SCC controller)

The low pressure safety switch opened while the heater was running, which usually points to a combustion airflow problem.

Likely causes:

  • Blocked or partially blocked flue
  • High wind at the flue terminal
  • Combustion fan slowing or failing
  • Condensate in the pressure switch hoses

Safe checks before you call:

  • Turn the heater off at the isolator or power point, wait 5 minutes, then turn it back on and press Retry on the wall controller if a message appears
  • If the code returns after one reset, leave the heater switched off and book a licensed gas fitter

What does Braemar fault code 5 mean? (Braemar TQ and TQM series ducted gas heaters (ICS control board with MagIQtouch or SpectroLink wall control); also logged by older TH series 4 and 5 star heaters with the SpectroLink SCC controller; not applicable to 1-stage ICS models)

The duct temperature sensor (thermistor) is reading out of range because it is disconnected, shorted or faulty.

Likely causes:

  • Thermistor unplugged from the control board
  • Damaged thermistor cable
  • Faulty thermistor

Safe checks before you call:

  • Turn the heater off at the isolator or power point, wait 5 minutes, then turn it back on and press Retry on the wall controller if a message appears
  • If the code returns after one reset, leave the heater switched off and book a licensed gas fitter

What does Braemar fault code 7 mean? (Braemar TQ and TQM series ducted gas heaters (ICS control board with MagIQtouch or SpectroLink wall control); codes 1 to 19 are also logged by older TH series heaters with the SpectroLink SCC controller)

The heater tried to light but could not detect a flame within the allowed time, and locked out after five attempts.

Likely causes:

  • Gas supply turned off or gas pressure too low
  • Dirty or worn flame sensing electrode
  • Damaged or disconnected spark or flame sense lead
  • Gas valve slow to open or not opening

Safe checks before you call:

  • Check whether other gas appliances in the home (such as a gas cooktop) are working, which shows whether gas is available
  • Turn the heater off at the isolator or power point, wait 5 minutes, then turn it back on and press Retry on the wall controller if a message appears
  • If the code returns after one reset, leave the heater switched off and book a licensed gas fitter

Braemar fault code FAQs

Where do I find the fault code on a Braemar air conditioner?

Check the remote or wall controller display first. Some models flash the indoor unit’s lamps in a pattern instead; the table above lists documented lamp patterns alongside their codes. If nothing is showing, the code may only appear while the fault is active.

Can I clear a Braemar fault code myself?

You can reset the system by turning it off at the isolator or breaker for five minutes. If the code stays gone, it was a one-off. If it returns, the fault is real and needs a licensed technician, and repeated resets can cause further damage on compressor or refrigerant faults.

Does a Braemar fault code mean I need a new air conditioner?

Usually not. Most codes point to repairable faults like sensors, fan motors or drainage. Our fault find gives you an honest verdict either way, and the fee is credited if you repair with us.

Are these Braemar fault codes correct for Australian models?

Yes. Every code on this page was checked against Australian documentation (seeleyinternationalhelp.freshdesk.com, callmercury.com.au, mrfrostyheatcool.com.au), not overseas lists, because the same code can mean different things in different markets. Meanings still vary between model series, so treat this page as reference and cross-check your unit’s manual.

Fault codes for other brands

Not a Braemar? Every brand below follows the same format: the documented Australian codes, what each one means, how serious it is and what is safe to check yourself.

Mitsubishi Electric codes have their own library: Mitsubishi Electric fault codes. Or start from the full fault code lookup, which covers more than 1,000 codes across 15 brands sold in Australia.

Written by Oliver Hastings, T&K Airpower. Last updated 14/09/2026. Compiled from Australian sources including seeleyinternationalhelp.freshdesk.com, callmercury.com.au, mrfrostyheatcool.com.au, comfyhome.com.au, so you can check every code against the official documentation. Fault code meanings vary between model series and controllers, so treat this page as reference only and never remove panels or work on the refrigeration or electrical parts of the system yourself.

Been having my home air conditioning serviced by T&K for years and always impressed with how this company operates. From booking an appointment with a repairman to job completion, this is a truly professional operation. But it hasn't lost the human touch. To my surprise and delight, my repairman Daniel rang to inform me he might be later than anticipated because the job he was completing was taking longer. He wasn't that late in the end and was friendly, genial and, most importantly, efficient and professional. Stayed true to the quoted price too, which didn't break the bank. Highly recommend T&K.

Thank you so much for your review! Means the world to us hearing great feedback about our team! I will pass this on to Dan and the office Team 😊

As Director of CS Real Estate managing a Property Portfolio, one of our business objectives is that we only partner with quality suppliers / tradespeople. Working with high performing and reputable businesses is nonnegotiable. In late 2024 I contacted T&K Airpower for two separate maintenance jobs. From the moment I made contact with them, I found them to be extremely responsive, reliable and most importantly experts in what they do. There quotes and pricing is very competitive. And further to that, with each job I received a detailed invoice and photos of the works undertaken. I've attached some pictures of the new PC Board installed along with the new wall controller. I wouldn't hesitate recommending T&K Airpower, Cindy, Julie and the entire team do a great job. As a customer, I know my landlords are in great hands. Thank you to the team at T&K Airpower.

The guys were half an hour earlier than expected. Although it was nearly two weeks from when I put the warranty claim in with Hitachi. They were very thorough in their inspection and completely contradictory to the installers opinion who said it was a fault with the unit itself. The problem is still unresolved !

Extremely happy, very thorough and friendly been using T&K Airpower for some 20 years plus, and have never had to complain about their service. Had a Solar Health Check done, and an Electrical Switch Board Upgrade that was badly needed, service was second to none, highly recommend. Price all up was good, and peace of mind guaranteed. 😀😀

Last week we had a replacement air conditioning system installed by T&K. Technicians Oliver/Kieran and Noah attended all day Wednesday 21/2/24. Oliver attended Friday 23/2/24. The work performed was outstanding. My wife and I rate very highly the service provided before the installation and during the installation. Should you consider utilising T&K you won’t regret it. What we rate very highly was the professionalism and meticulous care taken.

I frequently base my assessment of any service provider on first contact. In the case of T&K Airpower Air Conditioning and Electrical, first contact was very positive. The quote I received was very reasonable (especially with the seniors discount), and I accepted that quote without needing to go to any other providers. The service tech (Nathan) arrived when scheduled and was very polite and helpful. He completed the required work efficiently, and within a very reasonable time frame. I would no hesitation in useing this company again.

We were being gassed by an old Daiken air conditioner losing its refrigerant and causing headaches in our Study. We called T&K AirPower through our RAA membership, their technician / salesman Toby arrived promptly and was able to spot the problem then present options which became a reasonably priced new Mitsubishi unit which we coupled with another unit for our adjacent Guest Bedroom working off the same fan coil unit. He spent time on a solution for an on roof mounted unit for our Family Room. The installation team Oliver, Luke and Giaran did a great install including a new electrical circuit. Definitely a 5 Star review but for a couple of old dodgy baby boomers, I was impressed with the ease of communication and professionalism.

We contacted T&K Airpower to arrange some repairs on our Temperzone air conditioner. I called them on a Thursday and they had a technician (Toby) available on the following Monday morning 3 August. Our controller was not working properly and stopped working altogether the day before Toby came. When he arrived he checked what we wanted done and which we discussed with him. He said he wanted to have a look at the unit outside to see if he could at least get the air conditioner working. As he was doing this a solenoid fused with a large bang so he couldn’t do anything else until that part was replaced. He contacted the office to arrange a quote so they could commence sourcing the parts. The controller took longer than expected to source and the job was booked in for Friday 14 August but due to another job being postponed we had our job brought forward to Wednesday 12 August which was most appreciated due to having a very cold house during this period. The technician that completed our work was Artie and he was absolutely fantastic. When he arrived we went through everything that had to be done which we were advised would take up to about 5 hours. The new controller had to be completely re wired, the new solenoid fitted and the whole system serviced. We also replaced 3 hard wired fire alarms replaced. Artie was very tidy and respectful and polite in every way. We would request his services if that was possible should we have any further issues that need attention. Also the young ladies in the office being Alicia and Ebony were also very helpful and courteous every time I dealt with them on the phone. The total cost was just over $2300 which we thought was reasonable for the efficiency and the job being completed by a quality technician in Artie.

Used them to investigate an issue with a ducted AC system, attended by professional and experienced technicians who were able to quickly identify and fix the problem.

Lovely experience with technician Tristan. He walked me through every step, explained what would benefit my split system and gave me a run down of all my options.

Received fantastic service, advice and support from Toby today. He communicated really well, spent time explaining what the issues were and what my options were. Then the replacement parts I needed were couriered over while Toby waited and my heating was working before he left. So efficient! He also spotted that my smoke alarm was expired which I had not asked him to check.

We initially had a temporary repair of our old air conditioner. That worked well but a new one was clearly the way to go. The service was uniformly prompt and outstanding. Tobi deserves particular credit for his professional, thorough and non-pushy contribution. Highly recommended. Tom Stubbs
