Home Charging That’s Done Safely and Sized Right

A dedicated home EV charger charges far faster than the plug-in lead that comes with the car, and it’s the safer way to charge regularly. But it’s a serious, sustained load on your home’s electrical system, one that runs for hours at a time, often overnight, and it has to be installed accordingly.

The charger is the easy part. The switchboard capacity, the circuit, the load management and the compliance are where it’s either done right or done cheap. That’s electrical work, and it’s exactly what we’ve done in Adelaide homes for 30 years.

As licensed electricians, we install the charger and handle the whole electrical side, including whether your switchboard can take the load and what’s needed if it can’t.

Why a Home Charger Beats the Plug-In Lead

Most EVs come with a portable lead that plugs into a normal power point. It works in a pinch, but it’s slow, often only adding a small amount of range overnight, and a standard power point was never designed to carry that kind of load for hours, night after night. Done daily, it’s the sort of thing that warms up wiring that isn’t rated for it.

A properly installed wall charger runs on its own dedicated circuit, charges several times faster, and is built for daily use. It’s the difference between topping up and waking up to a full battery, and it’s done safely, on wiring sized for the job.

What an EV Charger Installation Includes

  • Assessment of your switchboard and supply capacity
  • Supply and installation of a quality EV charger (Tesla, Schneider Electric, EO Charging, GoodWe and more)
  • Dedicated circuit and protection
  • Load management setup where required
  • Solar integration so you can charge from your own power
  • Testing, commissioning and app setup

Why a Proper Install Matters

  • Faster, safer charging than a standard power point
  • A dedicated circuit that won’t overload your home
  • Switchboard checked and upgraded if needed, before there’s a problem
  • Solar integration so you can charge on your own power
  • Compliant with current connection rules

What to Expect During an EV Charger Installation

We sort the electrical side properly so the charger just works:

  • We assess your switchboard and supply capacity, and confirm whether any upgrade is needed before quoting.
  • We run a dedicated circuit with its own protection, sized for the charger you’re getting.
  • We mount and wire the charger, and set up load management where the supply calls for it.
  • Where you’ve got solar, we configure charging to use your own power where possible.
  • We test, commission and set up the charger’s app so it’s ready to use before we leave.

A straightforward install is usually done in a few hours; if your switchboard needs work first, we’ll tell you up front.

Charge From Your Own Solar

If you’ve got solar, or you’re adding it, your EV charger can draw from it rather than the grid. We can set up:

  • Charging that prioritises surplus solar
  • Scheduled charging for off-peak rates
  • Integration with an existing or new solar system
  • Smart monitoring through the charger’s app

Being across solar, batteries and the switchboard means we set the whole lot up to work together.

What Affects the Cost of an EV Charger Installation

A simple install near the switchboard is the cheapest case. Costs climb with the complexity of the job, mainly:

  • The charger you choose and its features (smart, solar-aware, scheduling)
  • How far the charger is from the switchboard, longer cable runs cost more
  • Whether your switchboard has spare capacity or needs upgrading
  • Whether load management or extra protection is required
  • Any solar integration you want set up at the same time

We assess all of this before quoting, so the price you get is the price for your home, no surprises mid-job. Flexible payment options are available through Brighte.

Our Approach to EV Charger Installation

  • Assess your switchboard and supply before quoting
  • Recommend the right charger for your car and home

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I just use the charger that came with my car?

You can, but it’s slow and it’s drawing through a standard power point that wasn’t designed for daily EV charging. A hardwired charger on a dedicated circuit is faster and safer for regular use.

Do I need a switchboard upgrade to install an EV charger?

Sometimes. It depends on your switchboard’s age and spare capacity. We check it as part of the assessment and tell you up front whether an upgrade is needed, rather than finding out halfway through.

What charging speed do I need, 7kW or 22kW?

Most homes are well served by a 7kW charger, which adds plenty of range overnight. A 22kW charger needs three-phase power and suits higher daily mileage. We’ll match the charger to your car and how you drive.

Do I need three-phase power for a fast charger?

For the fastest home charging (around 22kW), yes, that needs a three-phase supply. A 7kW charger runs on standard single-phase power. We check what you’ve got as part of the assessment.

Can I charge my EV from my solar?

Yes, with the right charger and setup. We can configure charging to prioritise surplus solar so you’re fuelling the car from your own power rather than the grid.

How long does installation take?

A straightforward install is usually done in a few hours. If a switchboard upgrade or extra electrical work is involved, it takes longer, and we’ll tell you that before we start.

Can you set me up to add a second charger or a battery later?

Yes. We can plan the circuit and switchboard so adding a second charger, or a battery, down the track is straightforward rather than a rewire.

Which EV chargers do you install?

We install EV chargers from Tesla, Schneider Electric (EVlink), EO Charging, M-Elec, GoodWe, Sigenergy, EVOS and Energizer. We’ll recommend the right one for your vehicle and how you charge.

Is finance available?

Yes. We offer flexible payment options through Brighte, and your technician can talk you through it on-site.

Are you qualified to install EV chargers?

Yes. It’s electrical work, and we’re fully licensed electricians who’ve worked in Adelaide homes for over 30 years.
